Mid-Season Report Card: Mavs

Dallas hasn't exceeded anyone's expectations, but they're still a playoff threat. The second-half positioning is important for them.

From favorite to under the radar

Luka Dončić was a lot of people's MVP pick before the season commenced, but Dallas has been one of the biggest disappointments this year. Luka is still spectacular, and could absolutely re-enter that conversation should the Mavericks' fortune flip during the second half.

He's pouring in a near-triple double average with 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. Dallas is currently in that low seed/play-in tournament range, but could jump up a couple spots if other guys step up.

The Seth Curry Trade

Dallas seems to have lost this trade after what seemed on paper as a certain fit. Josh Richardson was dealt from Philly in exchange for the best 3P% Curry in the league, and while his role with the Sixers has been a great fit alongside Simmons and Embiid, the same cannot be said for Richardson's fit with the Mavs.

Josh Richardson has an ability to create shots and be a reliable offensive threat, something that was supposed to keep Dallas afloat at the beginning of the season with Porzingis out. He has underperformed notably with averages of 13 PPG, 3 RPG, and 3 APG. If he can get into a groove on the offensive end to go along with his good defense, watch out for the Mavs come playoff time.

Deadline

Kristaps Porzingis is certainly on the table with his inconsistent play and a role that hasn't been of much substance on Dallas this season. Teams will be interested in him, and with the Mavs' history of trades, a deal could certainly be done.

The asking price will be interesting because Porzingis's trade value has dropped this season, and assuming Dallas wants to trade him east to avoid playoff matchups, draft assets may not be enough.

John Collins would be a good fit with Luka and company; maybe Atlanta is interested in Richardson and KP, and a deal could be completed in March.
